Carol’s Story

Carol began her caregiving journey right out of high school, working in a variety of care settings before joining Help at Home in 2005. Nearly two decades later, her story reflects what has always been at the heart of Help at Home’s Culture of Caring: showing up for people with compassion, respect and genuine connection.

“I just care about people,” Carol said. “It’s what God has blessed me with.”

While the world — and healthcare — has changed significantly over the past 20 years, Carol says the essence of her work has stayed the same. The skills she relies on every day were shaped early in life, learned from her mother — cooking, cleaning, and caring for others with patience and empathy. At Help at Home, those everyday acts become meaningful moments that help clients live safely and comfortably in their own homes.

What truly defines Carol’s approach is respect for each individual. Even when tasks feel routine, she always asks for her clients’ input, understanding that personal preferences matter — especially in someone’s home.

“It’s hard to let strangers come into your house,” she said. “So you treat people the way you’d want someone to treat you.”

For Carol, caregiving isn’t just a job — it’s a calling. “It’s been a good career,” she said. “It’s not for everybody, but it’s good for me. I like being able to help people the way they need to be helped. I like to see everybody win.”

Caregivers like Carol are the reason Help at Home has been able to deliver relationship-based, person-centered care for 50 years — creating great days and meaningful moments for the people we serve, one home at a time.
